LSC - Tomball Hosts GRIT Summit

Lone Star College-Tomball will host a GRIT Summit on Friday, October 14, in the LSC-Tomball Beckendorf Conference Center to share with higher-education professionals its groundbreaking work infusing GRIT in the classroom over the last eighteen months.

Partnering with Dr. Paul G. Stoltz, the leading authority on the science and method of measuring and strengthening GRIT, LSC-Tomball conducted last fall the most comprehensive research study and implementation of GRIT administered by any higher education institution to date. The study was aimed at determining, among other things, to what extent a faculty member’s emphasis on GRIT in the classroom affects the improvement of a student’s success and performance.

As defined by Dr. Stoltz, founder/CEO of PEAK Learning, GRIT is the “capacity to dig deep and do whatever it takes — even sacrifice, struggle, and suffer — to achieve [one’s] most worthy goals in the best ways.”

At the GRIT Summit, Dr. Stoltz, LSC-Tomball president Dr. Lee Ann Nutt, and other LSC-Tomball instructors and personnel will share their experiences with instilling GRIT in students through methodology and example. “This is an exciting opportunity for us to share what has worked for us at LSC-Tomball,” said Professor Latoya Hardman Lewis, director of the teacher’s education program and presenter at the summit. “In this day and age, some students don’t realize they are letting adversity derail their momentum. Pointing out the importance of perseverance and the benefits of good GRIT has produced, for us, tangible results.”

Organizers hope the summit will become an annual event where educators can convene and share their experiences and best practices working with GRIT.
