Lone Star College is deeply committed to serving adults with cognitive disabilities by providing unique opportunities to access higher education and is pleased to announce the lifePATH program will be replacing OLS®.

“To be the first college in the United States to replicate the Occupational and Life Skills degree (OLS®) developed by Bellevue College has been an honor,” said Dr. Lee Ann Nutt, LSC-Tomball president.

The contract with Bellevue College requires LSC-Tomball to replicate all facets of the OLS® model exactly as Bellevue College developed it.

“Lone Star College has also been working this past year with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to achieve formal recognition of the OLS® degree in Texas and with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to achieve regional accreditation,” said Nutt.

Official state recognition and accreditation would allow students to receive federal financial aid and for Lone Star College to receive state funding. For that to happen, THECB and SACSCOC would require some changes to the OLS® program.

“Since Bellevue College would not allow changes to the OLS® model, and since Texas recognition and regional accreditation would not be granted for that model without changes, it was in the best interest of our institutions to terminate the licensing agreement with Bellevue College,” said Nutt. “The agreement will terminate effective the end of the spring 2016 semester. To ensure we fulfill our mission of providing access to higher education for the population with intellectual and developmental disabilities, we developed lifePATH – which will be ready for the fall semester with no interruption to current students.”

LSC-Tomball will be hosting an Open Forum May 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Teaching Theater (E-100) to provide more information.

The lifePATH program is a robust, customized educational pathway that complies with Texas and SACSCOC requirements and provides students more alternatives to earn credentials, including certifications and degree options. It also includes many program supports to ensure student success. First year OLS® courses already completed by the students at LSC-Tomball will be transferred to the new lifePATH program.

Known for its leadership, innovation and steadfast commitment to student success, Lone Star College provides high-quality academic transfer and workforce education / career training programs to more than 83,000 credit students each semester, and a total enrollment of 95,000 students. LSC is training tomorrow’s workforce today and redefining the community college experience to promote student success and economic prosperity. Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., is the chancellor of LSC, the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area, which consists of six colleges, eight centers, two university centers, Lone Star Corporate College and LSC-Online.
